How to run Windows Update even if your administrator has disabled it

Make the following registry changes:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoWindowsUpdate"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\WindowsUpdate]
"DisableWindowsUpdateAccess"=-

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\WindowsUpdate]
"DisableWindowsUpdateAccess"=dword:00000000

Enable and start the Windows Update service

Run Windows Update (%SystemRoot%\system32\wuapp.exe startmenu)


Windows 2003
Windows XP

Make the following registry changes:

Enable and start the Background Intelligent Transfer service

Enable and start the Automatic Updates service

Run Windows Update
